Lord Wallace of Tankerness QC, the Advocate General for Scotland, today outlined in a speech at Glasgow University why the Scottish Parliament cannot legislate for a referendum on independence at present.  Lord Wallace of Tankerness QC also set out how a legal, fair and decisive referendum can be achieved if the Scottish Government works with the UK Government.

Lord Wallace of Tankerness QC, the Advocate General for Scotland, in a statement issued today said the Scottish  Government’s forthcoming consultation paper cannot conceivably produce a solution to the legal problem which prevents Holyrood holding an independence referendum.


11 Jan 2012 | Public Lecture on Scotland's Constitutional Future

The Advocate General for Scotland, the Rt Hon Lord Wallace of Tankerness, will be giving a public lecture on Scotland’s Constitutional Future at the invitation of the School of Law of the University of Glasgow.   At this timely event, the Advocate General will set out the UK Government’s conclusions on the competence of the Scottish Parliament to legislate for a referendum on independence.            

The lecture will commence at 4.00pm on Friday 20 January 2012 in the Sir Charles Wilson Lecture Theatre and will be followed by a Question and Answer session. The event will finish at 5.30pm.
