Legal staff in the Office of the Advocate General for Scotland and the Legal Secretariat to the Advocate General are, in the main, part of the Government Legal Service for Scotland (GLSS) and seconded to the UK Government from the Scottish Executive. The recruitment of all legal staff is undertaken by the GLSS, which is a professional community of lawyers in Government from various legal offices.
GLSS lawyers are all civil servants and recruitment is by way of open competition and is run by the Scottish Executive. Vacancies are advertised on the Scottish Executive website as well as in the national press.
Beyond the recruitment stage, the GLSS operates an assignment policy for its legally qualified staff which is designed to facilitate staff development and to ensure a high quality legal service that meets the needs of the different offices. This approach means that lawyers develop transferable skills and are well equipped to deal with the fast moving and unique nature of much of the work in the GLSS.

The Offices of the Advocate General are supported by a small number of administrative staff and recruitment to these posts is normally handled by the Scottish Executive and advertised on their website. Some administrative staff are seconded from UK Whitehall Departments. For details of recruitment to UK Whitehall Departments, visit:
